My kids had a middle school field day at the end of the year. It was the year we lived a block from the school AND the year our daughter got her first phone. I worked from home, and she kept calling and texting me with stuff like:
“Can you bring my sweatshirt? I’m cold.”
“I’m hungry. Will you bring me a sandwich?”
“I really want a Coke right now. Can you get me a Coke?” (We never have soda. I think she expected me to run to the store for her. 😂)
Field day ribbons were a big deal in my day too but I’m just now realizing my kids’ field day does not do them. But also very happy to learn we have a first place winner of the hula hoop relay in our midst.
I’ve recently become enamored with Bananas videos on the ‘Gram. More so than the spectacle, it’s a fascinating case study in entertainment and putting fans in seats. If I ever win the literal Bananas lottery, I think I’ll go just to see why everyone else does!
I am extremely old school when it comes to sports so I am hesitant on the whole Bananas thing. While I think my take away from attending a game would probably be similar to yours…I think I’d probably still go to a game. Once.
Yeah, once was enough for me. It's basically set up to create the online clips, so you pretty much get the gist of it from watching the tiktoks or reels or whatever they post on their channels.
If I remember correctly, hula hoop relay was something weird and unathletic like you were in a hula hoop with another kid and you ran down to the cone and back and then the next kids on your team went. I know it didn't involve any actual hula hooping because I could never do that (even though at least two of my kids are weirdly good at it).

And when I didn’t respond, she texted:
MOM
MOM
MOM
MOM
MOM
MOM
MOM
MOM
I immediately regretted getting her a phone.
Haha, live and learn, I suppose.

Yes, greatness has arrived on Substack!
I've heard nothing but good things about the Bananas, but I suspect I'd feel much the same as you did. Looking forward to next week's Duck Tales.
Haha, Duck Tales… you’ve done it again!
I’ve been to one minor league baseball game in my life. The entertainment between innings was the best part. I’m guessing I would enjoy the Bananas.
Sounds like it would be right in your wheel house!

You definitely can't argue with the success. They are masters of marketing for sure!

Sounds like a fun spring break. I'm intrigued by the hula hoop relay. Do you still have the skills?
Personally, I am suspicious of anyone not currently suffering from anxiety. Maybe because anxiety likes company too.
